- Painting plein air in winter is tough. I often paint in my car to protect me from the elements. I try to get out a bit in winter so I don’t get too rusty! I remembered this alley, close to home, and decided I should get out to exercise my plein air muscles. The scene was a bit colorless and I thought of packing it in but I loved the shape of this bare tree—and so I built the painting around that tree.
