What is Figuary ?  Let me first say that I am not the one who coined this term but its an amalgamation of the words Figure and February. Annnnd what's that have to do with anything you ask? Well it simply means that this month I'm dedicating my time to drawing and painting The Figure. You might think this is coming out of left field...that as an urban landscape artist I'd have zero interest in The Figure, but the opposite is true! I have been drawing the figure in live model sessions for over 20 years. It's my belief that The Figure is probably THE hardest subject to Master but it's such a joy trying to Master it! It can be frustrating and maddening too...but worth all that goes into it! It's also got a LOT to do with my Dad who LOVED the figure. His love has rubbed off on me over the years. Everything I know about the figure, I owe to my Dad and when I'm immersed in drawing the figure...sometimes I can feel him close by. He taught me to see and appreciate the grace and humility of the figure. Its simplicity of line and form and yet so complicated at the same time. It's technical...there are proportions and methods to "get it right" and yet you have to "feel" it too if you wish to communicate the humanness and the emotion that's behind that slight twist of the head, the slump of that shoulder, the tension of that reach.
