Past and Present
Original plein air landscape oil painting by Delaware artist Sarah Baptist. This wonderful old red shed has seen better days but is hanging on for dear life. What character!
Original plein air landscape oil paintings are a joy to create. This painting was done during Brandywine Plein Air event in Oct 2015. About 40 artists descended on Marshallton, PA on this wonderful crisp, sunny autumn day. This dilapidated shed caught my eye and so I was off on my adventure to capture it in oil paint.
Working en plein air or “in the open air” is a wonderful way to interpret your environment. My goal is to create the feeling of a place at that moment rather than record it like a photograph would. My brushwork is loose and impressionistic since I do like to work quickly and express the scene I am looking at. Sometimes I work a little pencil drawing into the wet paint to add details as well as a different mark to the painting.
